During almost every family tour of the North, we tend to
visit Avraham Melnikov's wonderful sculpture, the Roaring
Lion, at Tel Hai. This led to an inspiration to paint it as
a gesture to the sculpture and its sculptor.
I was highly moved by the words of the sculptor, who had
aspired to exhibit the lion so that the manner in
which it roars skywards does not symbolize victory or strength, but
rather pain.
A series that commenced as paintings of a beautiful landscape, gradually
gained more and more personal expression.
During the work process, I isolated the lion, diminished it and
positioned it alone in the darkness -
Vulnerable and fragile.
I think that the last painting that I painted in the series accurately
expresses my feelings, my concern about the dangers waiting to ambush us
and my anxiety regarding our future here.
